A former president of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS), Sammy Binfoh, has hinted that he will be contesting the Adansi-Asokwa seat in the parliamentary primaries of the governing New Patriotic Party, scheduled to take place on April 25.

The seat is currently occupied by the veteran Kwabena Tahiru Hammond, who has been the MP for the area since 2000.

Eyes on Parliament

Should Mr Binfoh be successful in his attempt, he will be joining a host of young student leaders who are seeking to enter parliament next year.

During the primaries held late last year in NPP “orphan constituencies” (in other words, where the party does not hold the seat), Rashid Kwesi Ettuaful, 2016 president of the Graduate Students’ Association of Ghana (GRASAG), beat the district chief executive of Ajumako Enyan Essiam to become the NPP’s local candidate.

In the primaries for the opposition National Democratic Congress, Frank Amoakohene, a former president of the National Health Students’ Association of Ghana (NAHSAG), won in Asante Mampong and Mohammed Adams Sukparu, ex-president of the Private Universities’ Students Association of Ghana (PUSAG), in Sissala West, becoming the NDC’s local parliamentary candidates.

The contender

Mr Binfoh, a native of Adansi-Hwiremoase in the constituency, holds both a Bachelor’s degree in business administration (BBA) with accounting and a Master’s in business administration (MBA) with finance. He also qualified in the ACCA part one examinations.

In August 2018, he was appointed chairman of the policy and research committee of the NPP Youth Wing, serving simultaneously as chairman of the party’s students’ committee. The former NUGS leader is also ex-president of the Student Representative Council (SRC) at Christian Service University College in Kumasi and leader of the same school’s alumni.

Colleagues describe him as “an activity-oriented person and a team player with good leadership qualities”.

He is expected to pick up nomination forms today, Monday January 27.
