STATESMAN OPINION: ADIEU MAJOR MAXWELL ADAM MAHAMA! Featured

Last Saturday , the body of late Maxwell Adam Mahama was finally laid to rest at the Osu cemetery. The whole nation was grieved by the gruesome, senseless and brutal killing of the major.

As expected, Ghanaians from all walks of life expressed their sentiments on the Major’s murder with people proposing all manner of things that should be done to the killers, but at the end of the day, the Commander in Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, assured the whole nation that, he would ensure the killers are brought to Justice to face the full rigours of the law.

Now that the late Maxwell Mahama has been put to rest, and the police hunt for the killers, even though a number of them have been apprehended, there are a lot of lessons we as Ghanaians can draw from the Major’s unfortunate death.

In Ghana, mob justice is not unheard of in many parts of the country particularly in major cities. Day in day out, there are reports of one alleged thief being lynched and at the end of the day, nothing comes out of the police investigations.

We nonetheless do not side with those who take the law into their owns hands and take the lives of others because they lack confidence in the judicial system.

Ghana is a country governed by the rule of law that is what each and every citizen must know and we therefore deem it fit to commend the Bolgatanga Police Command for arresting some 63 persons suspected to be the killers of an alleged witch at Pelungu in the Upper East Region.

The 67-year-old widow, Yenboka Kenna, was lynched at the Pelungu market on Monday, May 29, 2017, after she was accused of being a witch, the same day Maxwell Mahama was lynched.

We hope the manner in which the late Maxwell Mahama’s murder had been condemned will bring a closure to mob justice in our country because if we continue to tow this line, we will end up taking the lives of innocent citizens.

To the family of the deceased, our prayers and thoughts are with them and we hope that we learn from this tragedy so that the painful departure of this gallant son of the land will not be in vain! May his gentle soul rest in peace! Adieu major Maxwell Adam Mahama!
