International Women’s Day 2020: Women speak through actions

On International Women’s Day 2020 one woman showing the way the best servants of the people do it was the Honourable Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya in Greater Accra, Sarah Adwoa Safo (NPP).

The Daily Statesman’s roving reporter was delighted on Sunday when, on ordering a cab to Osu, this taxi turned up.

It is just one of the Work, Pay and Own scheme vehicles that Ms Safo has been organising for residents of her constituency, without fanfare. The scheme is making it possible for ordinary people in Dome, who otherwise would not have the means, to start their own business and earn a living.

Many of the beneficiaries are first-time entrepreneurs and relatively new to Accra.

Dome-Kwabenya, a large “new” constituency in the sprawling Ga East Municipality (population over 147,000 at the time of the 2010 census), is a very mixed suburb of Accra. It became a constituency in 2004 and its first MP was Professor Aaron Mike Oquaye, now the Speaker of Parliament.

Ms Safo, who is still in her thirties, became the MP in the crunch 2012 election, when Dome was the scene of a hair-raising standoff over manipulation of voter figures. She is now the Deputy Majority Leader in Parliament and Minister of State in charge of public procurement.

Sarfo the taxi driver is a happy beneficiary of his MP’s Work, Pay and Own scheme, which brings in a steady income and allows him to look forward to owning the tools of his own business. His cab was clean and quiet, and he was efficient, polite and honest.

Just the sort of small business owner we all like.

And it is Ms Safo who has made his work possible. You know a good woman by her actions.
